Laniidae: The Shrikes

Ethan has recorded 7 out of the 34 shrikes.

Lanius ludovicianus (Loggerhead Shrike)

Lanius vittatus (Bay-Backed Shrike)

A real head-scratcher. This fellow is apparently enjoying a raspberry which was somewhat surprising to Ethan since he has only observed shrikes eating various bugs and lizards in the past. What’s more, this is the only raspberry Ethan can remember seeing in his nearly 3 months in India and to Ethan’s untrained eye, it does not appear to resemble Rubus niveus which an extremely cursory search led him to believe would be the most likely raspberry to be encountered in the region. But Ethan knows even less about berries (and aggregate fruits) than he does about birds so there’s probably a good explanation for all of this.

Update: It’s probably some sort of grub/caterpillar

Lanius isabellinus (Isabelline Shrike)

Lanius cristatus (Brown Shrike)

Taken in Vientiene.

Lanius tephronotus (Gray-Backed Shrike)

Lanius collurio (Red-Backed Shrike)

Lanius schach (Long-Tailed Shrike)
